Week 7 : Task 3 - NOVA - Cracking the Maya Code

NOVA - Cracking the Maya Code


In the 16th century, Spanish explorer rediscovers the Maya, and also they scorched the their civilization. Especially, the May people had writing system and also their civilization thrived for over 2,000 years, distinguished by a sophisticated culture. However, the Spanish conquistadors took off their writing system and civilzation. So, today there are only four books or partial books survived.

After I watched this video, I suprised because of progress of the Maya civilization and the Spanish conquistadors's demolition. It is very deplorable event and never happen it.

Vocabular
1) scorch (verb) : to burn it slightly
2) sophisticate (noun) : someone knows about culture, fashion, and other matters that are considered socially important
3) conquistador (noun) : the conquistadors were the sixteen century Spanish conquerors of Central and South America.
4) demolition(noun) : the demolition of building is the act of deliberately destroying it. often in order to build something else in its place
4) deplorable (adj) : you think that it is very bad and unacceptable.

New York Times : Diagnosing Psychiatric Disorders

This video shows that one child has a psychiatric disorder(illness). His name is Paull and 13 years old. His mother explains his diagnosis make him very quiet, look like sad, depress, and often violent. He has maybe psychiatric disorder after half dozen ages.

One doctor says that diagnosing psychiatric disorder don't be known to have tests, just as blood test or x-ray, and only when doctor sees pictures. In addition, this disorder changes some different style tempers while grow up a child. Sometimes a child is depress, violent and cheer.

Vocabulary
1) Diagnosis (noun) is the discovery and naming of what is wrong with someone who is ill or with something that is not working properly.
ex) I need to have a second test to confirm the diagnosis.
2) Psychiatric(adj) means relating to psychiatry and involving mental illness.
ex) We finally insisted that he seek psychiatric help.

At this week, I feel time flies!! The Summer quarter is almost finishing be left just one week.
Although my listening skill improved than last quarter, sometimes I cannot understnad real lecture. Actually, because of last test score I was frustrated, so today, I decide basic exercises which is new start for listening and accuracy meaning.
My first choice is already commend site by teacher is conquest of Randal's Cyber Listening Lab.

Apartments for Rent listening is some easy, but some word is very useful.

1) work out (phrasal verb): going well
2) commute (verb): to travel between home and work or school
3) vacancies (noun): rooms not being used or rented
ex) Do you have any vacancies starting next month?
